but then won't start. My buddy backed the boat off the trailer, while I was driving the truck. It started fine, idled for a second, then won't restart. I went to the local Evinrude shop, changed the (wet) plugs for new ones. Still won't start....

Re-trailered it to the shop and the guy says it sounds like water in the gas(?) Well, I just had my daughters out for a day of boating this past Saturday and all was well, so I can't imagine that much water got into the system that quickly. Could the water accumulator (assuming it has one?) have become overwhelmed (so to speak) and passed the water into the motor? I did buy the water displacement treatment stuff at the dealer as well.

The mechanic was good enough to spend a few minutes telling how many of "these" issues he's seen He suggested syphoning all the water out of the tank, draining the carbs. I have 3/4 of a tank (on the gauge) and it's an in the floor 40 gallon tank!!

Boat is new to me (this would have been the third time out. Admittedly, I'm in the Northeast and it's been raining here for...what seems like 6 months.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,

Pete

check your spark and compression, does the boat have an emergency kill lanyard, check it.

Yes,

The lanyard is just below the key switch. I removed and reseated it a couple of times. It just doesn't seem like it would be that if it just start one second and not the next second?

I should have checked spark when I changed the plugs, but I was on the water, hanging over the transom (to change the plugs). Not a good position to check the spark. Now that it's in my driveway, I'll check the spark....if it ever stops RAINING!

I suppose I could take the lanyard switch apart and short the wires (just to take that out of the equation).

Thanks again,

Pete

So a buddy of mine has a friend who's a cert. Marine Mechanic. Before he had a go at it, we decided to eliminate a few things. The motor has NO SPARK:

- We eliminated the lanyard switch by using a different harness. Same issue...no spark.

- We replaced the power pack (with a known good working unit. So it's not that, but that would also eliminate the coils (which are after the the power pack). No spark

(We also did a compression check. 120 psi in each, so that seems fine.)

Today he (the mechanic) is looking into the all the bits under the flywheel. I'll know more soon.

Also, any thoughts on disconnecting the VRO system and going to premix? He is HEAVILY suggesting this move.

Any thoughts?

Thx,

Pete
