Hi guys, my second post now about my new to me boat with another question on a small leak I've noticed in my driveway now. It's leaking what looks to be oil of some kind? It's much thinner than motor oil, but I'm not sure what it could be from? It's coming from the weep holes under the fill/vent screws on the lower part of the motor... Pictures below, how concerned should I be?

Sorry I couldn't have them show up directly, but they're too large for this site apparently :

Probably unburned gas/oil.
When you tilt the motor it sometimes leaks gas out the carb.
It finds its way to the bottom and out the weep holes.
Profile? Location? You might be close to someone who can help.

Jerry's the man, btw, so heed all advice he shares.....Frank too.

I've got the Factory Service Manual for this motor. I'm getting to know my 1995 model very well thanks to all my blunders. An "off topic" suggestion, if I may; grease your steering cable soon and often as I fought mine for 4 days and finally had to replace the tilt tube, which really stunk, all bcause PO failed to properly maintain. If you need anything looked up in the manual, let me know. It's a wise investment, btw.

I do have the service manual that the previous seller had given me. I was hoping that's all the leaking was. On to the greasing...just use standard auto grease? Is there a specific place to apply it or just all over?

Its recommended to use a Marine grease. The 1st spot is where the steering cable goes through the tilt tube. Best if you disconnect the steering arm, clean out all the old grease and replace with new. There's also a couple of grease fittings on the tilt bracket. I push new grease in until the old is all out.

Using marine grease will eventually cause the problem Eric had.
It builds up and eventually turns hard. Then your doing more work than needed.

I use any spray cleaner to get the old off and loosen anything .
Then I use regular 30wt. to lube it.
Or white lithium spray grease.
The same with the grease fittings on the side.
A thin grease again white lithium or just lithium grease.
I carry a can of WD-40 on the boat and use it when I'm out.
I fish in salt water so it's rough on everything

Do this before you have trouble.
Get a small propane torch, start heating the whole kingpin area.
Then slowly add grease till it comes out the top or bottom.
If you heat the bottom the grease comes out there easier.
Let it cool and then do the top.
That kind of flushes out the old.
There are plastic seals, both ends of the kingpin area don't over heat.

I had to actually drill and put in new fittings on one motor.
It was so stuck I couldn't push with a truck(not really)
So do this all the time.
Especially if you run in salt water.

I fully believe the truck comment. My old one is "fused" I think, lol. When I get all my little projects done and get her on the lift, I'm going to heat that thing red hot and see if I can free. That way Ill have a spare.

Thx to Jerry's post, I'll be changing out the stuff I bought from West "Add 50% to normal retail price" Marine to the above. I think Jerry likes seeing me work!

Again, forgive my ignorance and thanks for all the advice, while the steering seems fine now I definitely want to lube the thing up properly to prevent something like that happening. I took a quick picture of my setup below, where exactly do I apply the oil or lithium grease?

Also, quick question on the amount of water coming out of the pea holes at idle? Does this seem normal?

What I'm doing, which is probably overkill, but I'm not going through this again if I can avoid it, is this;

Disconnect the steering arm from the motor to the cable and pull the cable all the way out, towards the starboard side. Get a 1" or less wire brush and clean out the tube that's part of the bracket the cable goes through, and then put new grease in there. FOr me, in salt water, I'll b doing it annually.

Looks like you too have a grease fitting to port side of the tilt tube that pivots your motor up & down. I'd keep fresh grease in there too.

jerry, the smart one, says regular 30wgt auto lube instead of the "marine stuff", btw.

The steering cable,BIG NUT,loosen it and squirt oil, lithium spray grease or WD in there.
The other end comes out the steering tube.I use oil, spray white lithium or WD on there.
Like Eric says grease the fittings.

If they are the LEAST BIT DIFFICULT then you need to do the steps I posted.

You can actually BLOW the fitting out of the soft aluminum!!
Be careful.J

OK, I'll take a look at lubing the steering this weekend. Anyone see the YouTube video? Does my water flow seem low? We were having some minor overheat issues after long idles this past weekend.

I'm a big truster of the infrared digital temp guages only. Shoot a reading on the heads after she's warm. My '95 is a little diff from your '94 so comparing and contrasting doesn't work on my end.
