Hey folks,
I recently aquired a 94 Sprectrum 16 pro avenger with a Force 40. Can anyone tell me how large the tank should be? The tag is unreadable but appears to be 12-19 range.
As for the engine, where do I find the serial number? I have several numbers from tags and stamps but am not sure which is the engine serial#.
I need this in order to determine if the engine is the original or not and get the year of the engine.
Thanks for any help.

Re: 94 Sprectrum/Force 40

Most motors the numbes are on the mounting bracket somewhere.
Usually the model number is easier to use.
Wouldn't hurt to give us all the numbers.
My NAPA parts catalog goes to 97 the Force 40 hp appears in 92 stops in 95.
though that may just be where info stops.

I have a 1994 17' Spectrum and it has an 18 gal. tank. I also have a 70 horse Force and the serial # is on the left side (drivers side) on the engine mount right beside your trim motor.

Re: 94 Sprectrum/Force 40

I sold my 16 spectrum avenger last year.
It had a 12 gallon tank, but I managed to get almost 13 gallons into it.

Does the 40 have enough power for that boat?
I had a 70 on mine.
40 hp is a little low for a boat that is rated for 75.
It will probably be ok, if you don't carry a heavy load.

Re: 94 Sprectrum/Force 40

Thanks for the info folks. I appreciate the responses. I have a couple of other questions as well.

The motor does not appear to have a tell tale nose and nozzle. I do not see any water spitting out when I run it. (I do have it hooked to the hose by the way:) Could this be an air cooled unit? I hav a manual for it coming tonight so I should be able to tell from that right?

Does spectrum still build boats? I have not been able to find current info on them??? I was curious to see if i can determine the tank size from the serial information?

Thank again.

Motor is not air cooled.Water should be coming out somewhere.
Be sure the water intake is clear check the thermostat in a pan of hot water to see if it opens as it should.Depending on the manual it may indicate
where water comes out.Be sure the water supply is working correctly or you may burn up the impeller(pump).I prefer a barrel and be sure the water is above the pump.

As steelespike said, a water barrel works better for those motors.
They don't work well, or at all on the muffs and hose.

Water should splatter out the exhaust relief holes on the back of the motor leg.

You can make a water tell tale for about $10.

There is a small pipe plug on the top rear of the motor.
Remove it and screw in the appropriate brass fitting from the hardware store.
Attach a length of plastic tubing.
Drill hole in bottom right side of the motor cowl and route the tubing through it.

Back around 1990, Brunswich, which owns Mercury Marine and many boat companies, bought Blue Fin boats. They used the facility to make the Spectrum boats. Somehow the Spectrum and Fisher lines were combined, both making the welded hull boat like you have. Then about 1996, the Spectrum line was dropped, and the Fisher line continued. A few years later, the Fisher line was sold to Tracker Marine (Bass Pro Shops).

Thanks again for the input. So I have a serial # for the motor. Can anyone tell me the year of the motor based on this?
0e039755...not sure if those are 0 or o.
Thanks

Re: 94 Sprectrum/Force 40

Mercury really made a mess of the model and serial numbers for a couple of years.

They never did really break down the serial numbers by year from 1992-1994.

But, they started with OE000001 in 1992, and ended with OE093699 in 1994.

And that is the letter "O", the letter "E", and the rest are zero's.
