94 Yam 90 Jumps out of gear in Reverse

In forward, no problem. In reverse at low power, no problem. With more power applied, Clunk-clunk.<br />This just started. The control cable is very worn, and it is going to get changed anyway. That may be all that's wrong. Also, I understand shift shafts on older models rust and tend to twist, causing adjustment problems. Does anyone know if the 94 has a stainless steel shift shaft? Any other insights will be appreciated. I don"t want to rob from my forward adjustment to pay the reverse adjustment, except as a last measure. Why would that ever need readjusting anyway?

The adjustment is for when the cable stretches. I would change the cable first and see if proper adjustment won't cure the problem.
