9422 Evinrude 9.5 running right or not?

I have rebuilt the carbs, replaced the fuel lines, fuel pump, replaced the impellar, resealed the lower unit and new gas tank with new filter and bulb. I mixed the gas 24:1 for about 4 gallons since it had sat unused for at least 15 years and wanted to make sure it got some extra oil in it. Took it out today to fish some and run some gas through it. Went about 5-6 miles or so, a lot of WOT. I have it on a 12ft alum. boat, two people about 180 each, battery, trolling motor and tackle box. I would get to 13 MPH by the GPS, but it would take a quarter mile to get there. Didn't want to get going, seemed to be lugging and struggling to get to top speed. No tach so couldn't tell you what the rpm's were. Does this sound normal for this size motor on this small V bow alum. boat or am I expecting too much? It starts easy and will idle fine.

Oh and pumping the bulb while getting up to speed didn't help anything. It doesn't sound like it is missing.

Really doesn't sound bad to me. Perhaps you could shift your load and get a bit (say2mph) better. I have a 73 - 9.5 and a 79 - 9.9 and the 9.9 is a faster motor hands down. No idea why .4 HP makes such a big difference and the 9.9 is 30 lbs. heavier too. If it's even a little sluggish at speed I would recommend checking your point gap and cleanliness. Made a big difference with mine. Best of luck. Rick.

I have a 14' alumacraft, and I wouldn't expect more than 15mph w/just me (170lbs) and a fuel tank with a 'lowboy' 9.5hp. I'm sure that you could do a little better w/a 'shorter' prop (smaller diameter or less pitch to get it close to max rpm's), but it sounds like you're getting about what you should out of her.

Think I am going to pull the flywheel and look at things under there to see how things look. Will post results.

My 9.5 is on a similar weight boat with non-planing hull and only runs 12 mph. It does run well though.

One trick I did on a 6 hp that worked was to reduce pitch which increased rpm and actually increased overall speed.
So.......if you are not at optimal RPM you can drop pitch a bit and be in better shape. Small motors notice Big RPM differences in even 1" change

Thanks for that info. So I might be dreaming up a problem. Pulled the fly wheel and checked the points. They were a little off on the tight side. The magnets had a little bit of corrosion on them and they were tight in their spaces. The coils were in great shape, no splits. Points were clean, just a little too tight. We will see tomorrow if it makes a difference. All connections were tight. That is a pretty ingenous way to adjust the points with that screw in the points bracket.
