I have a 95 Ocean Pro. The lower motor mounts are "broken" They are corroded and cracked. Apparently this caused the engine to bind and jammed my shift rod. I had to replace the gasket that surrounds the shift rod where it enters the lower unit too. And my shift cable.

Does this sound crazy? How about the rubber "mounts" (they look like rubber pads) are $100/peice and I need 2 of them. That sounds like a rip off to me. What could have cause this?

Also is it safe to run my engine w/out the thermostats? My mechanic took them out last year and said they did not need to be replaced. Should I be looking for a new mechanic?

If I'm thinking about the right engine, yes you do need T-stats. Your engine has a water cooled rectifier and without T-stats the water level doesn't get high enough to properly cool the rectifier.
