Boat has sat for 4-5 years now, and trying to get it ready for water currently. I pulled the drain plug for the gear lube and had a small amount of water come out first. 1/2 measuring cup or less, then the lube...Wondering if condensation can build up from sitting so long or do I have bigger problems to deal with here?

By far the most common cause of water in the foot is failure to use a fresh gasket every time the plugs are out. Less often seals on the shafts have failed.

More important, however is the fact that that water has been sitting in there for years. You may have corrosion damage in the gears and bearings.

JB(or anyone for that matter) I have the lower unit down for changing the water pump. While Im this far into it, and with the water sitting inside, should I attempt to look inside the prop shaft area? Keep in mind, this is first time ever dropping a leg, and changing the water pump, so Im very green and keep reading the steps in the manual..Doing ok I suppose other then the cherry above my eye when the leg finally let loose. Would you recommend a "novice" with decent mechanical abilities to open up that prop shaft area with all those gears and everything else inside?

If so what am I looking for? I guess some surface rust and what not, anything else?
Thanks

Nope. Don't pull the lower unit apart. Fill the lower unit with fresh lower unit oil, use new washers on both plugs, then use the boat. When you get back, check to see if more water has gotten into the lower unit. If not, you're golden. If so, then new seals for it.

If you start messing with the lower unit, you won't be boating this weekend, or next, most likely. Before starting to take things apart, get a service manual for that outboard.
