Re: 95 Johnson 50hp

I cant wait to try it out. I also have a video of it running but cant figure out how to upload it.

Not sure if the VRO system is working or not? I will mark a line on the tank and see if its drawing oil. Until I can verify its working like its supposed to, Ill stay with the premix.

The horn did sound a couple of times when it was idling, but went away once I opened the throttle. And after maybe ten minutes of running the horn never came back on... so I figured it was air in the line.

Re: 95 Johnson 50hp

Not sure if I need to start another thread?

But... I did finally get to test it out on the water, and I wish I could say I was smiling, but no... looks like Ive got some issues.

While it ran pretty good sitting in the driveway, on the water was a different story.

The main issue was that I couldnt get it to come up on plane, I could slowly advance the throttle and it seemed like if I tried pushing it past 22-2300 rpm, it would die out, just no power at all. I pumped the fuel bulb while it was running and it seemed to help keep it running, but still no power. Finally I pushed in and held the ignition key to activate the primer solenoid and it finally perked up and was able to get it up on plane.... if we kept pumping the fuel bulb.

So obviously the problem is fuel related, Im still not convinced the fuel pump is working? I think I also have an issue with the connector at the fuel tank, it might be allowing air in the line? From what I remember with dealing with 2 strokes and fuel bulbs... I remember pumping up the fuel bulb until it was hard, then you really didnt have to mess with it after that. This one seems to pump up, but then after running just a bit, it feels like it lost its prime.

I did purchase a brand new Johnson fuel tank, and an Atwood fuel line for a Johnson and the fuel line came with a Johnson fitting for the engine, but had a universal fitting for the tank. Well the Johnson tank also has a Johnson fitting so I cut the old fitting off and installed it on the new line, and for some reason, it feels like it dont fully seal, like it has some slop in it allowing air to enter the line.

Can someone explain the primer system? I assumed once its activated, it squirted fuel into the carb, but what if you held down on it? could it be possible that one cylinder/carburetor isnt working?

I also think part of the problem is that the float level is set too low, I didnt have an official gauge but I gave it the old eyeball method so its probably off too.

I am almost ready to convert it over to a non vro pump and be done with it, and Ive got questions about that, any good threads that show the conversion?

Re: 95 Johnson 50hp

sorry for the late update, but I did get it converted to a non VRO fuel pump, and finally got the floats set correctly, and it runs like a champ. The little 50 pushes it right along at 35mph. :joyous:
