95 vip 5.7 vibrating, clacking, and wont accelerate.

Its a 95 vip 5.7 mercruiser i/o, and i just put a new motor in it this week. :redface:when i started it up with it hooked up to the waterhose everything sounds great, with no shifting noise or anything. But when i put it in the water it makes a loud knocking noise, vibrates off and on, and only can putt around. The motor revs up fine but you dont move but just a little bit. IF anyone can help i would really appreciate it, im really just ready to get this thing going. I put the motor in myself and this project has turned out to be more than i thought!

High revs with minimal propulsion and alot of clanking noises, just doesn't sound good.

Is there lube in the drive?
Was the engine properly aligned prior to drive installation?
Do you smell burning rubber in the engine compartment.
Was the prop reinstalled correctly?

Proper engine install procedures are all covered in the service manual. That would be an excellent checklist to start with.
