95 Yamaha C85. I think I will just shoot the tach and be done with it.

I bought a boat with this motor on it about two months ago. the first two times I took it out, the tach worked just fine. The third time, the motor wouldn't start after I had fished for awhile. Upon closer inspection under the back deck, it appeared that the previous owner had hooked one side of the 24 volt trolling motor to the starting battery and one side to the trolling battery. the motor was hooked up to the trolling motor battery. I started swapping the leads and fried the rectifier when I bumped the cables together during the process.

I have replaced the rectifier. It looked nothing like the OEM part I took off, so I was a little skeptical, but tach worked in my driveway. I took it to the lake and now the tach is not working again. It acts like I get a signal pulse of some sort becuase the needle will move up and when the motor is runnig, but it doesn't go back down. I would think that I don't have +12v and ground hooked up properly becuase the needle doesn't reset to exact zero when I power it up, but I checked them last night and they are correct.

The only other thing that I think could be a possiblity is that sometimes when I turn the key off, the motor runs for another 3-5 seconds and then dies.

Could the ignition ground be causing my tach to go screwy or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help.
