Re: '96 Johnson 115 crossflow sputters at idle after powerhead rebuild??

Did a cranking speed spark check this morning. All 4 cyl. will jump a 7/16 gap with a nice blue spark. Is this sufficient for a spark check, or do I need to check it while idling?? I also noticed the roller(cam follower)on the carb linkage is tight against the cam. I don't think this is correct, this may have the throttle plates cracked opened a bit.

The roller should not contact the cam follower until the roller in even with that line in the follower.

Hey Dhadley - How do I know if I'm running rich or lean at idle?? Do you have any tricks to figure this out?? Thanks in advance...

BTW the last time at the shop, the Wrench leaned out the idle circuit, by installing larger idle air bleed jets. I'm thinking it's too lean now because at cold starts, it requires lots of cranking and choking with a little sneeze action.. I will be starting over with the Sync and Link per shop manual and hopefully someone can tell me how to figure if it's Lean or Rich.. Thanks again..

If its sneezing at idle, its too lean. Get the smaller jets back from him if you can.

Re: '96 Johnson 115 crossflow sputters at idle after powerhead rebuild??

Update- With GOOD NEWS!!! Again, did a cranking spark test cold >> Good spark on all 4. Running the motor in the barrel, it starting acting up and did another cranking spark test >> No Spark on 1 cyl. Did some T/shooting and found both coil trigger wires were pinched behind the top coil mounting bolt. Both of these wires come off the powerpack Orng/pink and Orng/purple. Soldered and heat shrink both wires >>> Spark on all 4 cyls. Thought it was all fixed, but still had to go thru the Sync and Link adj. The idle in gear is now good!! It's not 100% perfect, but pretty damn close. I guess the Wrench got in a hurry last time I had it in. One question, do you think the pinched wires could have damaged any other ignition or electrical parts?? BTW - Just put on a 4 blade Bay Pro Stiletto 17P. 42mph at 5600 rpm. I'm going to raise the motor 2 holes in hopes of getting 5800 rpm. Thanks again for all the Help...
