Hello all. I just had all 6 carbs rebuilt and a new stator installed. New gas tank and lines. Boat ran good at the marina after the repair. Today I ran 34 miles around the St. John's river seeing how she does. No problem running but after I turn the motor off it will start up and idle low, when I give it gas it will die. It will start back up and do it over and over. Fuel bulb is hard the whole time. It will eventually start moving and I can throttle up and get back to running again. Any ideas?

I have the '98 Johnny 150HPV6 motor, and have the same issue, under certain circumstances. I think it is heat related, maybe some sort of heatsoak. The workaround for me is to start the motor under throttle only, and let her run at 1200 RPM or so, for a few minutes. After a while, she will idle and accelerate normally.

I have never heard of a fix...

Press key in momentarily when trying to accelerate. In/out/in/out momentarily (in other words, feather the key pressing).
If it picks up and goes, you still have a lean condition in the carb system, most likely the throttle bodies.

Thanks, I'll try that. Someone else told me the same thing, push key in and out. I have to get it back in the water. He was saying I could do it on the trailer, any thoughts on that? Thanks for the replies so far!

Not on trailer. You gotta be in a position so that if she takes off, you have it under control.
When you push the key in, even for a brief split-second, you are richening the mix that is entering the cylinders.
If it is lean at the carbs, you are shooting gas in PAST the carbs, and compensating for any lean condition.
I have had this happen to me. I was bogging at take off, feathered the key in and out, and was able to get the motor up to WOT,
because after maybe 3000 rpm, the majority of the fuel comes from a different circuit in the carb system. The high speed fuel circuit.
But you gotta get it up past that magic point, which relies on fuel from the low speed fuel circuits to take you there....

Just richen it up when trying to take off and report back what happened.

Ok thanks. I'll try to get it in the water tomorrow or the next day and see what happens. If the key in/out thing works what will that mean? Carb adjust? I pulled the plugs and they were brown colored, not too dark or too light.

Chris 1956, that was a problem with your motor and it was called heat soak. There was a cure for it so check with an old OMC Dealer or BRP customer service. It had to do with doing some drilling in the throttle bodies and maybe re-jetting.

Update.. found the ignition coil on the NEW stator is burned up. The coil operates the quick start, which explains why QuickStart no longer works and it's a pain to start. I have no idea what caused it to burn up. Any ideas? New stator will be put on tomorrow, hopefully it doesn't do the same thing.

Put new stator on, put new key switch in. Motor ran good. I'm in the gulf now 2nd day scalloping and it's toasting the ignition coil again:( not sure if all the wiring and electrical parts just need changed or what. Can't keep buying stators for one trip. I want to keep this motor but it's being a pain in the butt.
