Re: 96 Searay 175 merc 3.0 ignition problem

Ok it has power on both of those wires on alternator. It has power to and from the shift cut off switch just no power to the coil. I really need to get it going for this weekend, can I just run a jumper wire from key and splice it into the purple wire going to the coil just to get me through this weekend? Would that hurt anything since it has power to the cut off switch and the alternator?

I see of no reason why it would hurt but keep in mind that if it goes bad because something I/we don't know about, you will be paying the bill. It makes no since if you have power there and not at the coil. There are 2 banana jack plugs, one on each wire, and the Pur wire goes straight to the coil.

Is there 12v at the purple wire at the alt and the shift interupt? If so there should be power to the purple wire at the coil. pop the plug at the coil and test the wire at the plug for power.
Try jumping from Alt purple wire or from the purple of the shift interupter.

on your round plug on the engine side jump number 5 and number 6 when you do that you should have power to your coil , the number 5 is the purple , the number 6 is red and purple ,

Wondering is somebody used a needle probe and on point and it corroded open.

My though exactly, has power to both wires on the ALT and still does not have power to the coil.... HOW IS THAT

i think the red purple wire and the purple have to make a loop through the boat wire harness , sorry i am not very good at explaining stuff

If you click on my earlier link you`ll see that the red/purple is tied to the battery hot and the purple is a switched circuit from the key switch.System main feed from the starter is the Red/Purple. That goes to the dash and the purple ignition wire starts at the key switch.
Measuring 12v at the purple alt wire and at the purple shift interupt means your getting thru the key switch at least. The trick now is to figure why it dosent make it to the coil.Like I said, using a needle point probe is a no-no in marine wiring. It leads to corroded open`s in the wiring harness.

Thanks for all of y'all's help.
I ended up running a new wire to the coil from the purple wire that goes to the alternator. Everything seems to be working as it should now. Only thing I can think is the wire to the coil had a break in it or something. I appreciate all of y'all's help.
