How does a '97 Mercury 150 trim system work? My meter has stopped working, so I'm wondering why.

Also, can you still access the manual online? It was some time ago, but when I had a question about the oil injection, I found it online and printed the pdf file from the Fuel Systems chapter (3E). I can't locate that online now, except to buy the entire manual for $87.

There is no web address on the pdf file I printed before, but it is document 90-824052R3 June 2002.

I'm taking the boat in for every-now-and-then maintenance, like a new impeller. What else would you recommend?

It is starting and running good, except steering is stiff.

Sounds like the trim position sender has failed or the wire has come off. You'll find the sender on the port side of the swivel bracket. It had am arm on it that is moved as the engine is trimmed up and down.

VERY important on those engine is that the fuel pump diaphragms are replaced every year. The kit is cheap and takes about 15 minutes to install. Also make sure the mechanic uses the proper fuel line ties as supplied by Mercury, not just ordinary cable ties. If it uses ordinary ties, the fuel line could leak.

That could be one of a few things....

Stiff cable
Stiff tilt tube (cable in the engine)
Stiff swivel bracket.

To try and isolate the problem, undo the nut on the end of the steering link (where it gos in the end of the cable). If the engine moves easily, then it could be the cable itself, or where the cable runs though the engine tilt tube.
Undo the big nut the holds the cable in the engine (starboard side) and turn the steering wheel. Wheel still stiff, it's the cable.... Replace at your leisure :D
