97 johnson 150hp

I have just purchased a 97 jono 150hp with conventional carby system just want to know of any common problems with this model. The previous owner has disconnected the oil injection system for some reason but other than that all appears to be ok

Welcome aboard Ryan!<br /><br />I think the most common problem with any engine is lack of proper care to keep the engine in top notch shape. Since this engine is new to you, here are some things you could do to get to know the engine and help keep it in great running shape.<br /><br />Get a service manual, OEM preffered. Lot of good info specific to your engine.<br /><br />Get a set of compression readings. This will tell you what shape the cylinders are in and will give you reference numbers to go by in the future. Cylinders should be within 10 to 15% of each other.<br /><br />Check the spark to each cylinder. Each spark should jump a 1/2" gap with a hot lighting like spark.<br /><br />If you haven't checked the gear lube, do so and refill with fresh.<br /><br />Do you have the maint. history of the engine....last time the water pump impeller was changed out, last carb overhaul, etc.? Engine temp good at idle and WOT? All this matters to a good running engine and one that will give years of good service.<br /><br />All your need to know is in the service manual. Be the best thing you can do for your engine to get one. It may seem a little overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's all very easy and simple to do.<br /><br />And of course, you have the forums here at iboats for any help you need.....

Start looking at a powerpack, if it has never been replaced it will soon fail.

Sikpnter, why do you think the pack will fail? I have a 93 that has never been replaced. And several buddies have 60* motors that have never seen a power pack problem.<br /><br />Actually I've seen packs repalced that it turned out not to be the problem.

Sorry DH let me reword that! These are awesome motors but have had some powerpack issues just do a search

Like OBJ said in so many words, the name of the game is prevenative maintenance. Keep the cooling and fuel system up to par and she will live a long life. Electrical woes are secondary and when they happen you fix them, no need for preventative maintenance here.<br /><br />If you run in saltwater is good to change out the head gaskets every 3 years or so.<br /><br />Good luck and enjoy the engine

Actually the 60* motors dont have head gaskets, just O rings. They are kinda touchy about spark plugs though. Make sure you stay with Champion.
