New here with my first boat and boat project. Purchased a 97 Sea Ray 190, 4.3 LX gen+, The engine had water in the oil, tan in color. I'm hoping that I wont have to do any major fiberglass work but I guess I will see once I start taking it apart. My plans for the engine depending on the extent of the damage is to either buy a rebuilt short/long block, or rebuild the engine on my own. For the most part I know my way around an engine but I have never worked on a boat especially with fiberglass and the outdrive.

Went to home depot and made my own pressure tester with a tube valve and some fittings. Tested initially but had it hooked up the the outlet from thermostat then realized that the thermostat valve was prob closed... reason why it actually held pressure. Took out the thermostat and retested again at 15 psi. Pressure quickly dropped off.

Inside the engine compartment there was oil all over the floor. As I took the cooling hoses off there was a good amount of water still in the engine. Tried to take out the transom plug but it would not budge so just removed the assy. didn't look to good on the inside.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

The short story is, Pull the motor, 'n drop in a long block...
You can be boatin' in a few weeks...

Long story, Pull the motor, tear it down, 'n clean it up to see what's salvagable...
Then move on from there...

took apart the engine compartment so I could get in there. One of the motor mounts has a good amount of rust but looks like it can be cleaned up, tired to tighten done the motor mount bolts and they seemed pretty solid. There is a good amount of oil sitting on top of the intake manifold which leads me to believe that there is probably a crack somewhere between manifold,block/heads. Next step is to pull the manifold. Anyone know where is the best point to disconnect the fuel line going to the carb?

if you bought the boat knowing it could need a complete new engine and negotiated that in the price, your probably far better off dropping in a long block with 0 hours and take care of it like it was a new boat.

Ayuh,... Ya take the lag bolts outa the hull, the complete motor mount stays with the motor....

The fuel line is disconnected from the fuel filter, or fuel pump...
Wherever the rubber hose ends in yer application...

Just pull the exhaust manifolds to lighten the load,...
Then the WHOLE motor....

The drive is Off already, Right,..??

nice hull almost just like mine except a foot or 2 bigger. Pull the drive 1st then follow Bond-o's advise but if it were me I would make sure I had the service manual for you application before starting this proceedure and not the clymers.

Re: 97 sea ray 190 with cracked engine block

After removing the intake manifold found a crack right by #1 cyc. The drive is still on, haven't decided to pull the engine just yet. I was thinking about trying to repair this crack with some Marine Tex and just see how long it will hold. Since I bought the boat knowing it probably needed a new engine and was going to junk the block anyways maybe I should try to just do a temp/quick patch and just run the engine till it can't anymore.IMG_0033.jpgIMG_0034.jpg

Re: 97 sea ray 190 with cracked engine block

thats your call.i bought a boat with that same problem two years ago.the guy had done just that type of fix to it.it lasted long enough for us to buy it, and get ten miles out in the middle a cayuga lake when she quit.sure wasnt fun getting towed that far back to the launch.it is kinda like an airplane, you cant just pull over to the side of the road and wait for triple a.it can be a long wait for a tow in the middle of a lake.
regards and good luck with it

Buy a shortblock and have someone go over the heads and be done, the right way.
