My idle rpms out of water are around 1000-1100 rpm. In water is around 900, in gear around 800. motor sometimes stalls when going in reverse. I have to move the shifter quick with extra gas to keep it alive. cranks right back up fine.
fuel filter just been changed
fuel pump changed a few months ago.
plugs have about 5-10 hours on them at most

Re: 98 Force Motor Stalls in gear need help diagnosing

I'm speculating here, but it sounds like the motor's either really weak or there's something going on with the reverse gears in the lower unit.. If I were you and I felt like the motor was running well enough that shifting to reverse should *not* kill it out, I'd pull the lower unit (not that difficult) and see if it's hard to turn the prop by hand when it's shifted into reverse. Not sure how yours works, but mine shifts into reverse by pulling the shift lever UP -- you can watch your shift mechanism while shifting to know how yours works..

Anyway, if shifting the detached lower unit to reverse by hand and turning the prop gives you a lot of resistence, it's probably a lower unit issue.. If not -- if you get no more resistence in reverse than when it's shifted into forward gear, I'd start looking at motor weakness, probably starting with a good ol' fashioned compression check..

That's just me, though, and I'm certainly not an outboard mechanic.

Does the motor kinda stumble spit and then die or does it spit and then die, or does it just flat out die when you put it in gear.

Check the gear oil for metal shavings to rule out any l/u problems.
Get a second tach and make sure that yours is right.
Do a compression /spark test.
Pull the plugs to see if they are burning right.J

the tach has been acting up recently. that brings up a question, is the rpm suppose to be steady(constant rpm)? the rpms flucuate just a tad. but i do know the tach has been acting up recently(it will peg out until i hit it it goes back down)

did a compression check, 160-180 across the board.
i lied about the rpms, out of water on idle with muffs on idle is around 900 but i increased it to 950 to see if it fixes my stalling problem.
also the rpms only flucate 25 rpms not 200.

Out of water your rpms should be around 1100. In the water you want to be at 700-800 in gear at idle.
Compression seems a bit to high to me. Should be at max 160. Maybe try a different comp.tester
And see what you get? Read the link and sink sticky at top of forum. Very useful info there.

180psi? thats is going to blow the head..yea try a different compression tester .... i always found that the best way to adjust the idle is in the water..after all you use the boat in the water..try not to have the rev higher than 800rpm .. it could damage the lower unit when engaging in gear
