!988 Evinrude 225: Stator problem, Cause or Effect?

I have a 1988 V6 Looper that was running only on the starboard side bank but intermittent on cylinder 1. I did a resistance check on the ignition charge coils. The port side was 1000 Ohms (normal) and the starboard side was about half that, 485 Ohms ( not good).

When I removed the flywheel I discovered that two of the magnets were loose and will need to be epoxied back on, along with the others that probably aren't far behind. First question, what is the best epoxy to use? I've used the Hardman epoxy packets that come with the magnets in the past.

With the flywheel removed I could see that the filler material ( a black tar like substance) on the ignition charge coils had melted and run down on top of the engine. All three had melted at some point. I don't know what the third coil is for. Two go to the power pack (brown wires) and the third one goes to the terminal strip (orange wires) I can't say if they had melted because of this event or had melted prior to this. Before the failure there was no indication of a problem on the gauges, water temp good, battery charging circuit normal, tachometer working normally. Ocassionally it would run like it was down one cylinder.

The power pack is relatively new, not that it means anything but i would not expect it to cause a problem yet.

My question: Should I be looking any deeper into this or should I just repair the flywheel, replace the stator, and be done with it? I did look in the archives and found a thread that would indicate that I can just replace the stator and repair the magnets. I just want to fix this right the first time.

Get a new stator and get the epoxy kits from any BRP Dlr. I've never heard of Hardman.

Thanks for the reply.

Unless they have changed it, the Hardman epoxy with the purple label, part number 04003 is what comes with the replacement magnet kits.
here is a link to a picture of one of the packets.

Sorry about that one. Never looked at who made it.

I replaced the stator with one from a spare engine I have. I didn't have time to do the flywheel magnet repair, so I used the flywheel from the spare engine as well. I'll replace the magnets when I get time and keep it for a spare. Problem solved.
boobie, thanks for your input.

Update: 10/1/2012.
After replacing the bad stator with the used one from the spare engine, I notice that engine was not starting as easily as it had in the past, especially when the engine was cold. The ohms checks indicated that the stator was good. I did not have the proper equipment to do the voltage checks. The stator and flywheel were the only variables, so I ordered a new stator, and installed it. Now it is running as it should.
Bottom line is the stator ohms check did not find the problem. The voltage check would have. I will have the proper equipment to do the voltage checks next time around.
