Hello All,
Looking for some advice. I purchased this boat and outboard a couple of months ago. First 4 stoke I've had. Boat had been sitting to the point of bad fuel. Has carbs not FI. Fuel was drained and replaced above deck tank on 19' Carolina Skiff 198. Replaced spark plugs (old ones looked like normal wear), changed engine oil (was dirty), lower unit oil changed (dirty also), new fuel filter, hours on motor unknown due to bad hour meter, can't even read it. Motor runs well, some hesitation in mid-range RPM's believe it's carburetor/jets issue. Running some SeaFoam in the gas now to try and clean carbs. Previous owner said water pump was replaced a year ago and the bolts show it had been apart. Good water stream, no overheat issues.
Decided to change oil again yesterday after 25 hours of run time and it came out very "milky" looking. Definitely water/condensation in the oil. Due to the bad gas and fuel cleaner added I let this engine idle for extended periods of time while I was out fishing, 4 to 5 hours a couple of times thinking I was doing the right thing.
Did I cause this problem by the extended idling? Where I fish is only a couple of miles from where I launch so it might see 10 to 15 minutes of WOT.
Now I'm thinking of replacing the thermostat and flushing the oil and running it again without extended idling before I condemn the head gasket/head, whatever.........
I'm an automotive mechanic so I have some internal engine experience.
Any thoughts on this problem? Advice?
I ran an 85 HP pre mix Yamaha 2 stroke for six years in salt water without a problem other than a rusted trim motor.
Thanks in advance for your replies - I think this forum is great! A lot of good information here.
