just pulled the lu off my jw to replace the rather stiff water tube grommet, motor ran cool before this. i put it in my barrel and started it.....lotsa water spritzing from the holes....actually more than before, but she got hot quick. pulled it back apart...nothing seems to be amiss, grommet not pinched etc etc???? will these motors still spritz water if the water tube missed the pump???

Pull it apart slowly and check if tube is in pump housing grommet. When apart, stick a piece of fuel line over the watertube and blow up toward powerhead. Should be a bit restricted, but should blow through. If clogged, it's likely at the top of the watertube. I'm not sure of that model, but 60's 3hp had a 90 degree bend just below powerhead where it'd clog up. Yours may have an upper grommet and straight tube. At any rate, if it's clogged, just pull the powerhead off where it connects to exhaust housing and take a look. (you could try a weedwhacker line 'probe' to try to clear..).

Good luck!

Where is it getting hot? The cooling circuit is not the greatest on them.

it got hot enough to stall out in just a few mins at idle....could smell it cooking. it was spraying water out of the holes extremely well tho? when i took it apart again the top 8" of the ds was to hot to touch....oring was gone. ( hope its in the barrel and not in the cooling system)

A common problem on the 3hp motors is the water tube gets bowed from pushing on it while installing the lower unit. Then it rubs on the drive shaft, which wears a hole in it. Now water spills out the hole instead of going up through the powerhead. But it SEEMS to pump like crazy.
