For those of you who do this all the time, I have a couple questions.

The center studs on the outer transom assembly are corroded from being inside soggy transom wood. I have replacements but wanted to know the best way of removing the 2 studs without ending up snapping them off. I've been soaking them with PB and plan on nut piling 2 nuts on the threads and using a pair of vice grips on the shaft at the same time to turn them out.

I pulled off the outer assembly with the bell housing still attached, would it be easier to mount it on the stern before trying to remove the hinge pins? The hinge pins for the bell housing are stuck on this one, yeah I have the special pin tool but not sure now much heat to apply to the locktite. Is a heat gun enough or do I need to break out the torch? I've reviewed the manual and know where to apply the heat just wondering how much heat it takes to get the job done.

Ayuh,.... Just double nuttin' the studs should allow for turnin' 'em out,.... the vise-grips can't hurt,..
An Impact is Helpful, but not necessary,...
Sometimes, a Good Solid Wack with a BFHammer on the end of the stud helps break things free,...

I'd wait til it's back on the hull to do the transom kit,...
Saves chasin' it All over yer work bench, havin' it secured to the hull,...

I use a 1/2" allen key, 'n impact on the pins,...
Never had to heat 'em,... even without the impact,...
The threads are on the Opposite end of what ya see,... in the bell,....

Thanks Bondo, I'm sure I'll be needing your help again before this rebuild is over. I've read your advice numerous times and it didn't go unnoticed here, it's the reason I dumped the 120 cast iron lump for the 4.3. It's a challenging conversion but I'm up for it.
