A huge thank you to Dhadley and Gentleman Joe Reeves for the help on this 1978 70hp evinrude.
I ran into a problem that I never had before and it was an air leak that I could not find. Mr. Reeves was gracious enough to help me privately and Dale offered some valuable advice through the PM feature here.
The one that solved the problem was in a post from almost 8 years ago and it turned out that the throttle butterflies had worn enough of the carb body away that it was leaking air in at least two of the cylinders. The timing is still two degrees off but that will be solved tomorrow. The fix is to use a heavy grease and seal it around the carb body where the rod goes through on both sides. If anyone has a better lasting fix for this I would like to hear it. The guy said on his boat it will last a couple of years before he has to reapply it. New carbs are not available and any used carbs will probably have the same problem and the expense on this engine has definitely exceeded what was planned
This board is fantastic and I refer to it all the time. I don't post as much as I used to but still use the search feature when I get stuck.
I wanted to make sure that these two men got the thanks that they deserve for their patience and their involvement on this forum.
To all the mechs that help out here it is for you too.

I had a car with a carb that had the same problem. I had a machine shop put in a bushing to fit the shaft that tightened it all up nicely.

I have done the same as tx1961whaler did on old tractors.

figure by the time a machine shop fabricates the bushings and puts them in it will be more than the owner of this boat will want to spend. Although, my cousin's husband owns a machine shop and he is very good. Might have to stop in and see him.
I really wanted this post to be more of a thanks than anything else. It seems like once someone's problem is solved they just disappear. If someone helped you out on the road you wouldn't just get in your truck and leave without thanking them. I wanted to make sure that I was not one of those people.

I believe that Dale is super busy in his shop this time of year. There isn't a bad thing that you can say about Joe. Just wanted them to get their due. Thanks for backing me up on that.

Glad to hear you got it figured out and passed on some very valuable info. I still check out the site about everyday but most folks' questions seem to be answered or headed in the right direction. Lots of good people here like Joe.
