You guys have been playing fast and easy with your lock button today.... may I suggest you stop it or you will kill the thing you are trying to protect.

This forum is for adults and if kids sneak in, that is their parents look out. I agree that real vituperate language has no place, but to lock because you don't like the sub?... poster?... whim?.. maybe lose key stroke (I hope)

A suggestion to the posters is to not get so inflamed/offended over remarks made on a message board.

Re: A suggestion for the Mods

You probably havent been here long enough to notice, but suggesting anything to the mods in terms of suggesting new ways to look at issues etc is sort of like driving a scrap metal truck in a lightning storm.

I think to view "family forum" in a way that suggests that we act as though a kid is reading is absurd. I'm sure even the mods would talk differently, I know I would. I agree that vulgar language has no place here, nor do put downs and the like.

I also think that some religious and political subects here get to the point of being offensive and should be locked. The muslim comments especially.

Custombycrunch, we appreciate your thoughts on the matter however, we are under strict orders to maintain a sense of civility here at iboats and we enforce it. When we see that discussions turn into name calling and insults and the subject matter becomes lost in the process, we lock the thread before things get any further out of hand.

It really has nothing to do with the poster or the subject matter. The owner's of iboats have made it very clear to us that this is a family site and offensive language or content will not be allowed. Flammatory remarks against other members will also not be tolerated. Us mods are just doing our job, I hope you can appreciate that.

To limit free speech is to limit thoughts... if this forum is for kids only, it should be titled "the kiddie pool".

Show me one dock side that is PG13 and I'll sell you "a cat in the bag"(a pig in the poke)

Moslems have no sacred place in my universe, if they screw the pooch, let the pooch whine.

If true, time to get other Mods. The mods should consider who is posting and why ( boat owners) and the sponsor incentive to maintain this site (Boat owners... and the parts they buy from the sponsor of this site (Iboats)

My bet is that from the 85,000 members of this forum, 50% of Iboats revenue comes

LMAO, they own the site, they make the rules......if they wish to lose some business because of that its their choice. (Which I know they have). Its their business to run as they see fit.

Do I agree with the moderation that happens here? On a few occasions definately not. But again.........its their decision on how it gets moderated.

When a posting causes a problem can you just delete that one post instead of locking the whole thread?

Yes, Bassboy.

We can do that if we can catch it when it is just one post. We can also edit out offensive language without deleting the entire post. Most of the time there are already hostile retorts posted before we get to them.

That said, it is often like trying to seperate a pair of pit bulls that are trying to tear one another's throats out. You are really likely to get bitten, accused of playing favorites, accused of being power mad or worse.

All,

JB made very good points. If you didn't know, the moderators are volunteers. Not paid. We do this because we see a true benefit, of this board, to so many boaters, like us. The information I've gleaned here has saved me thousand$.

Just like everyone, I have my own personal opinions. I'm also sure I'm guilty of the things that I would lock or delete a thread for. I'm human. I'm not going to get upset when one of my counterparts "deletes me" or locks a thread that I let my emotions over run me on.

"Picking" through posts is time consuming, at best, plus we get accused of playing favorites, as JB said.

As we see it, when topics get off topic or the inflamatory personal remarks start flying, it's time to lock or delete it.

"Free Speach" plays no part here. "Equal Time" doesn't play either. This is a private forum. The addy does not end with: .gov.
