If saltwater block, expect inside block to look like this as well.... Cancer is cancer.
Fresh water only but I pulled the engine and installed the spare 3.0 engine I had. I suspect this has been an onging issue for a while. every since I got the boat years ago I was chasing an issue with when ever I came off plane from I wide open run the engine would idle high like 1000 rpm and if I bliped the throttle it would go down. I replaced all the like cable's, controler, and the sorts.
Last year I noticed oil was a little milky so I replaced the manifold and elbow and I thought that could be my problem with the high idle water in the cylinders causing a lean condition. well my high idle was still there but 15 hours of running and no more milky oil until the boat started running like poo. so I'm thinking the hole was just big enough to make let enough water in to burn and then it got bigger..

Also I now have a question about timing on the new engine install that I will post in a new topic

Surprising for fresh water use! Sure it was never in salt?

Here in salt water that's always a concern, when I removed my cyl heads 5 years ago they didn't look that bad in terms of corrosion neither did the internal passages of the block, but because the heads were cracked and the cooling passages were eroded by salt water cooling I replaced them. They had been run in the salt water at least 15 years by then. Not a lot of loose flaking rust in the block passages or heads, but everything covered with a layer of cast iron rust. Still running the original block who knows how long I'll get out of it. I just did 2 oil analyses in 2021 and just this fall and so far no water or sodium in the motor oil sample which is a sure sign of leaky head gaskets, or cyl head rust through. In this pic you can see how the cooling ports looked that mate up to the intake manifold. I also check the intake manifold at the start of each season because on the V-6s and V8s they can rot out right under the 'stat housing. I just pull the stat housing, drain the AF down a bit that I put in there for winterizing and probe the bottom, if it is solid I leave it. I have 2 spare 4.3 V6 intakes in the garage lol.
