Re: accidently Ran out of 2 cycle oil

The warning horn on both my boats is very loud. Easy to hear over the roar of the motor. If you didn't hear a warning, the horn probably isn't working.

A V4 rebuild kit (pistons, rings, wrist pins, clips, all bearings, gaskets and seals) is about $1100 for a quality kit. Plus the cost of boring and honing the block, its getting close to the $1800-$2400 price of a rebuilt power head. Check the power head prices on iboats, they have a very competitively priced service, and you know the shops they deal with are quality shops. A warranty doesn't hurt either.

Re: accidently Ran out of 2 cycle oil

...My boat has no alarm. is there an after market one i can purchase?

What year is the engine? They'e had overheat alarms "forever" a long time anyway, well before the VRO system. The overheat alarm uses the same sounder as the other alarms.

After the mid 80s they all had alarms for "no oil" and "low oil". The "low oil" is a sensor in the oil tank with a two wire cable running to the engine where it connects to a corresponding 2 pin plug or connects to the ground (black) and alarm wire (tan). The "no oil" is a sensor in the fuel pump itself (the oil part of it). The fuel pump's alarm has either a 3 or 4 wire harness connecting to a corresponding 3 or 4 pin plug coming from the engine.

All warnings (these two plus overheat) run to a horn in the remote control or in the case of 1996 and newer, a horn and lighted indicator in the "system check" gauge or tach.

The alarms should self test when you turn the key on - you should hear a chirp and/or indicator lights.

How does all of this relate to what you see in your engine, etc?

PS: here's a good intro to the system, fyi: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

My motor is a 91. the oil tank has two wires coming from it, but i thought it was for a pump.

I am going to take pictures tomorrow and post to see if anyone has a solution.

There should also be a test button neer the cap a black or red button when the key is in the run position press it in and you should hear a beep or siren. The siren should be located under the helm it looks like a beez nest somtimes!

If it's a 91, it is a "non system check" alarm, which means all alarms are a noise only, no indicator lights. The pattern of the alarm indicates which alarm it's sounding.

The two wires coming from the tank are for alarm only, nothing to do with the pump action at all. If they're not connected to anything at the engine, that would be one reason you didn't hear an alarm.

Also check how many wires are coming out of the pump, and take some pictures of those as well. Again, the wires coming from the pump are for alarm only, no pump function is electrical.

Read that continuous wave link, I think you'll find it helps.

I seized up an outboard, it was scored inside terribly, but passed the compression test with flying colors and ran for 20 more years, it's amzing the abuse they can withstand!
