I have a 1986 150 black max with oil injection. Can I add a temp or oil pressure gage to this motor? If so, where to find them, and how difficult?

thanks

Re: add temp and/or oil pressure gage

You can add a temp gauge. Some Merc 150's already have the sender installed on the cylinder head and all you need to do is connect it to a compatible Mercury temp gauge installed on the dash. Mercury sells the gauges for about $50. If there is no temp sender already on the motor, then you can get a temp gauge kit that would include the sender and compatible gauge. Teleflex is a popular brand.

There is no need for an oil pressure gauge on a 2 stroke motor. The only oil in the motor is in the fuel/oil mix going through the carbs to the cylinders. There is no oil being pumped through the motor like on a four stroke motor.

Where is the sending unit or plug located on the head? Do they make aftermarket kits or do you have to use Mecury stuff? What is normal operating temprature? I would like to install a temp. gauge on my 225 BlackMax also.

Re: add temp and/or oil pressure gage

Most V6's I've seen have the temp sender already in and wired to the harness. There is a lead that comes off the instrument harness from the engine controls that is tan/lt. blue. That's the temp gauge wire.

On the engine, there'll be a sender on one head with a single wire that goes to the alarm, and on the other head will be a 2 wire sender, one goes to ground, and the other goes to the tan/lt. blue wire in the harness, and thus to the controlls.

I would upload a color code chart, but this forum doesn't allow a reasonable size for such a file.

Hope it helps.
