I just bought a pontoon with a 1998 Evinrude GL 115HP (not FICHT) and really need more info about the engine operation. For example, I have to talk someone into hanging over the back of the boat to check the tell-tale when underway. My shop manual covers sensor installation on FICHT motors and switch installation on mine but doesn't tell how or where to add temperature and pressure sensors to mine. Can anyone help steer me to the info I need? I would also really like to know the oil pump is working also and the manual method of checking for changes in the level in the tank doesn't seem to be very protective.

i would think you should have both of these sensors already tied to a buzzer in you consol controls, i have. as i read, tan wire are usually the sensor/buzzer wires. the buzzer should sound with the key in on position and one of these tan wires grounded to the engine.
i have a question for any other real expert seeing this... what temp do the sensors go off at? i want to use a low cost autozone fan switchs as replacements on my '84 235.

Temp switches for overheat alarm are std. Sensor for temp indicator typically screws into a tapped boss on one of the heads and is completely independent of temp alarm stuff. Make sure to only get outboard sender and gauge. Completely different for inboards and I/O's.

Hooks, Jim is correct about the overheat alarm. I would recommend a water pressure gauge instead of a water temp gauge. You should see very good water pressure at all throttle settings on that motor. Look for a tapped plug on the lower port side of the motor, as I think the V4 has one there.

The other alarms you have are "low oil in the tank", "overheat" and "No oil being pumped by the OMP pump". if you get the low oil, fill the oil tank.

If you get the "No Oil" alarm, shut down immediately. Check the primer bulb on the oil tank and see if you can pump her up and get rid of the alarm. if not, I recommend you immediately mix sufficient oil into the gas tank to make a 50::1 mix and head home to check out the OMS System. You obviously need to carry the correct amount of oil in the boat to make this work.

If you get the overheat, slow down and go to fast idle in neutral and see if it stops. If it doesn't stop in a couple of minutes, turn off the motor, let her cool and limp back to the dock.
