Adding a tach

Is it difficult to add a tach to a motor that didn't come with one? I know on the Merc's there's a harness in the controls, but this is a Johnson GT100 from 1990, and the boat didn't come with one. To my knowledge it's the original motor and I'd like to at least have the tach.

Anyone do this? I can wire up an automotive tach but these outboards are a little confusing to me.

Thanks.

Very easy (even I could do it). There should be a gray wire in the control box that feeds your new tach.

Hey thanks. I did do a search but it talks about another wire on the motor itself. I am not sure what the controller model is, but I guess I can find out and see what's inside. Thanks again!

It is even easier than that. Your 1990 control box had a black 3 prong plug right below the key. You can buy a 3-wire tach harness that plugs right in and then route the wires to the 3 connectors on the back of your tach. Type in "BRP 0174732" into Google and you will see it. Or you can buy an aftermarket one from Teleflex for a little more.
