adding anchor line

Hopefully an easy question. I currently have an anchor with 100' of line and would like to add another 100'. What is the best way to attach the two pieces? Just use a simple knot or some kind of shackle?<br /><br />thanks

Yes, either would work. Make sure you use the right knot and dont mess it up

I'd suggest you use a shackle instead of a knot. You may want to use the lines separately one day and as time is often crucial, a 'quick connect' would come handy.<br /><br />Remember to fit an anchor chain at the anchor end.

Depending on how you use the anchor, a knot or shackle is a problem in raising the anchor. When we are in deep water, we use an anchor lift system to bring the anchor to surface. A knot or shackle will prevent you from using this and require manual pulling. Not bad at 50', but a major pain in rough weather at 200'-300'. <br /><br />Better route is to splice the ropes together to keep the transition smooth. Use a shorter rope for lakes or shallow water. Two scenario's, two anchor rope lengths. I use one of my boats in waters ranging from 2' to 300'. 300' of anchor rope is too much to carry in the river system, so we change the system when we go to salt water.
