Depending on how you use the anchor, a knot or shackle is a problem in raising the anchor. When we are in deep water, we use an anchor lift system to bring the anchor to surface. A knot or shackle will prevent you from using this and require manual pulling. Not bad at 50', but a major pain in rough weather at 200'-300'. <br /><br />Better route is to splice the ropes together to keep the transition smooth. Use a shorter rope for lakes or shallow water. Two scenario's, two anchor rope lengths. I use one of my boats in waters ranging from 2' to 300'. 300' of anchor rope is too much to carry in the river system, so we change the system when we go to salt water.
