Hey guys,

I am new to this site, but have been reading alot of your posts that have helped tremendously. I am wanting to have a seperate system just for my accessories i.e. stereo and gadgets. I have a 99 Glastron SX175 with a 3.0l I/O with a cranking battery and a deep cycle with a switch, but I am sick of having to switch and am going to be adding more accessories so I was thinking of making a bracket to be able to house another alternator on the motor to keep my accessory system charging while tubing and boarding. I will be starting from scratch and do not know to much of this so any information will be taken with great appreciation. Thanks.

Using a switch is the way most people do it. Second alternator sounds weird. If you really wanted to, you could swap in an alternator with more amps. I don't really understand why you want a second alternator though.

I want the two systems to be seperate so that way I do not have to use a switch and dont have to worry about my cranking battery dying. I want to able to charge my other system so that is why the need for another alternator.

You need a battery combiner not 2 alternators. Typical set-up is 2 batteries with a battery switch and a combiner.

You can get along just fine with a battery isolator or battery combiner. Don't need any switches. My preference is for the isolator, most go for the combiner due to simpler installation.

A battery isolator is what you need. It will charge both batteries while the engine is running and keep your starter battery "isolated" from the deep cycle when you run your accessories.

Should I upgrade the alternator?

Most of the time yes.

I use to install allot of stereos in my day and we use to
upgrade the alternator and this was done by going to an alternator shop and they would upgrade the diodes and such inside. but we would always use an isolator for 2 batteries. whats nice about using the isolator is you do not need to have the same batteries one could 800cca and the other one could be 550cca. and if you ever need to get a jump the terminals at the isolator.

Go with the combiner. An isolator will not allow your batteries to fully charge.

Check out this site for idea's i used their stuff in some off road rigs that i set up. It is high quality, and works very well.

In the meantime it will give you ideas on how to do your set up.

This site is also awesome, i've gotten everything from them to rewire my boat including battery management.
