I have a 1987 25hp merc long shaft, serial #A724122.
I bought a water jacket gasket and a thermostat and went to put the gasket on the aluminum plate and there was no space in the gasket where the thermostat goes through it, so I had to cut a bit of the gasket off so the thermostat could fit through the gasket properly.
I was told by the guy at the counter not to put any gasket maker on the gasket.
So I put it all back together and fired it up and water was coming out where the new gasket is.
When I took the back plate off yesterday, the fellow who owned it before me did not even use a gasket....all that was there was gasket maker, that's it, no gasket.
So what do I do now? Do I go and buy another gasket and start all over? Or do I just take the plate off again and put gasket maker on it and reassemble it?
The gasket part # is 27-86389 by Quicksilver...does anyone know if this is the right gasket. At the store this was the only one that was listed.
Thanks for any help.
BC
