Would adding a slight amount to methanol do any good for me trying to get some water out of the gas? im sure ive got a little as all these gas stations around here suck. as a preventative measure think it would hurt or help? ive re-ringed once already due to water, now i run a water seperator. ive got a 55 gallon drum of methanol sitting in the garage. wonder what the acceptable limits would be for adding methanol? 10%? or 5%? for a 12 gallon tank.

I'm sure someone will be along with a more scientific answer, but I've heard for years that the maximum alcohol content for outboard fuel is "0.0%". Trust your water separator.

yeah, but its really a 3 stroke, it has three pistons that are stroking all the time when the motor is running.

and you wan't to beat this guy? is there money involed, yes you will go faster but I would rejet the carbs (add a new jet) that would pick up the stuff, it the menthol should be premixed 10 to one with oil (tcw 3) this way you can shut the menthol off if needed.
If there is no money involved. the cost to repair and prep will not be worth it :(

Methanol will absorb the water, not mix with the gasoline, melt some of your plastic and rubber carb parts and cause the rest to swell.

Aeronut says trust your water seperator, I say trust Aeronut.

Good luck. :)

Greg,
Go find a construction sight, pickup a 8 foot piece of rebar, take it home stick it in your gas tank, hammer until all the rebar is in side the tank, pull it out. No more water in gas tank. :p

Re: Adding Methanol to Gas..

I am not a mechanic by any stretch, but I did buy an "Outboard Motor Manual" and it states that by no means should you use methanol. Or any high octane gas for that matter. It says that you can burn the pistons, the seals, the carb, etc... because of the higher temperatures needed to burn Methanol and high octane fuels. It does say that some of the newer engines do have a thermostat that will compensate for some of the heat, but they reccomend that you simply stay away from it....I Don't know, that's what it says....WG

Re: Adding Methanol to Gas..

From what I understand , Methanol in the gas, even in small quantities will attack fuel lines , seals etc. It is also corrosive to aluminum parts. It will also , to some degree , wash away the oil film , neccesiating more oil in the gas. It burns somewhat leaner than pure gas , raising your combustion temps.
And at last , it is only half as effective as Ethanol at absorbing water if I remember correctly.

What to do with your 55gal drum? how about selling it , and buy regular gas instead?

Re: Adding Methanol to Gas..

What to do with the 55 gallons of methanol:
1) Buy 15 gallons of Nitromethane and 20 gallons of castor oil to mix with it. You will have model airplane fuel to last a lifetime.

2) Rent a Wagner Power Painter. Put the pickup tube into the drum, light a match, pull the trigger, and see how many minutes it takes for the fire department to investigate the "foon-ball".

3) Take it to the local drag strip and sell it to the highest bidder. Use the profits to buy fresh 87 octane gasoline all summer!
