Adding Remote Trim/Tilt switch

My Ranger currently has a Trim/Tilt Switch in the front console and at the throttle control. I would like to add another switch at the rear of the boat.

Do I need to buy a special switch or will any 3 contact, 3 position switch work? I am guessing it needs to be a monetary switch, so that it doesn't get stuck on. I have a manual and a wiring diagram, so the wiring should be straight forward, or I suppose I could just tie into the front switch and run a wire back

Also, does anyone have any good suggestions on where to place a rear switch? I mainly want it so that when I'm loading the boat and installing the transom support I don't have to keep walking back and forth. There are also other times it would be handy to have.

My motor is an Evinrude XP-150.

There are pan mount switches that mount right under the motor hood. Your motor may have a knockout where it would go.

The switch would have to be waterproof (click). Up is blue, Down is green, power is red. Each may have a white stripe.

That is just what I need.

If I don't have a knockout, is there anything wrong with getting that switch and just mounting it to the bottom of my motor housing?

mine is on the upper side of the splash well. that way it can be operated standing on the ground or in the boat.

I bought a simple plastic momentary switch at Radio shack.
Momentary/ off (center position)/ momentary. It cost me 5 beans. I put it under the lip, on the inside of my transom, where it's protected from the water and sun. Brp wanted 45.00 for theirs.

Jquest, was yours a 3-way monetary switch or just a 2-way?

3-way, meaning up/off/down
2-way, meaning on/off

I'm not sure I really have anywhere I can mount it where it's protected, unless I put it in the rear storage, which defeats my whole reason for wanting it. I do however like the idea of a $5 switch vs. $35+.

3 way. Momentary in both direction and stays in the center(off position) when released. If it is going to be out in the open...I would go with WBW's option. With a switch that is going to get beat up by the elements...it might be wise to use something a little beefier. I went with mine cause I saw I could hide it away from the sun and salt.
