Adequate cooling for running engine in boat yard

Hi, I'd like to run my newly rebuilt engine before we launch this coming weekend. The previous owner had attached a hose adapter to the water intake line as shown in this photo:

When I run water through it, it just seems to come out the outdrive and I'm not sure if it's being pulled into the engine at all. I'd appreciate any input on whether this is sufficient for running the engine or do I need to get the OMC trunion cap adapter?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

yes , that works . I have one in the same location on my 302.

Just make sure that you have enough hose pressue. If worried just feel the manifolds or risers , if they are getting too hot to touch - kill it

but with adequate pressure from the hose you will be fine , just dont go above 1500 or so RPMs

Also, make sure that your raw water impeller is either removed, not turning or has water to it or you'll destroy it quickly.

just turn the hose on full and water will flow back to the impeller and lubricate it- should work fine

all water comes out the drive after it goes through the engine

If that's on the same drive set on your other post: check the sterndrives for a hose fitting like in this photo.

OMCes_Hose.jpg

That's a fitting that runs water both down the drive to the impeller and up into the engine. It was optional, so some drives don't have 'em.

Unfortunately, I don't have that hose fitting on my intermediate.

I only have the intermediate attached right now, upper and lower gear cases are not. Will that be a problem?

your water is going to leak out the trunions. Yoiu can run it but you need to put a clamp on the hose going back to the drive so it doesn't all leak out there.

Ok, but will the cool water circulate if I close that off? Wouldn't that just make it closed loop? Maybe I'll just put the lower drive units back on then run it....

Yes it will. With the drive on, the water kinda reaches the backside of the impeller and just stops there.
