Adjusting Maximum Spark Advance Without a Test Tank?

I need to check the maximum spark advance on my just bought used 1990 Johnson 115. I don't have a test prop (I need #382861), and I don't have a test tank. The only way to do it that I can think, is to have a driver run it on an open flat calm area while I do the timing light. However, my timing light is 40 years old, and in the bright sun, I think it will be hard to see the mark. I tried it on dry land at idle speed, I painted the 4 degree mark white and it was not very visible when I was out of the shade of a tree.

Any suggestions for a way to test it easier and less dare-devilish?
Also, are newer timing lights better in the sun?
