advancing timing

trying to get more performance out of my 20hp merc year2000, anyone know anything about advancing timing(how to, will it help)?

Yup -- it will help. It will help destroy the engine due to detonation. That results in holes in the piston followed by bits of metal floating around inside the engine followed by seizure and or parts exiting the block through large holes. Seriously, while one or two degrees of timing advance MAY provide SLIGHTLY better performance at the top end, it is not worth the risk and very likely won't be noticeable in the seat of the pants.
