Force motors have been out of production for over 10 years and are not fully supported with parts. Also some mechanics won't work on them because of that. Nothing particularly wrong with the engines themselves although they are pretty old-tech. I'd probably run one but I wouldn't pay as much for it as I would for a supported motor. Same deal with OMC sterndrives.

Most you posted were junk. #9 and the Rinker look promising. I like that Rinker. I grew up riding around in the outboard version of that boat. I've had this ad sitting in my photobucket account for fun http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/wd2385b.jpg

Fiberglass boats that look bad on the inside, are probably rotted! Take a gander at some of the restore threads in the restoration section of this site and you'll see why you probably want to avoid any that look rough. Unless the boat itself is close to free, I'd avoid any old glass boat that's going to need a new deck/stringers/transom.

Thanks ezmobee.

So, if I got the bass boat, and down the road wanted to put a newer (used) motor on it, how much am Ilooking at?

Also, no one has answered my question about my truck. Any idea if weight will be a problem for the larger Rinker?

Thanks,
Neil

Your truck will tow a typical 18'ish bowrider just fine.

A decent used 2 stroke outboard in the 90HP range can be had for $1-2k.

Re: Advice buying a used boat

Ok everyone, it's official, I'm driving 3 hours on Saturday to look at the Rinkerbuilt. And I'll have a fat wallet. We'll be taking it out on a local lake and taking her for a spin. If all looks good, and I don't find any problems with the boat or trailer, I think I'll be coming home with my new boat! Sorry Checkmate, no gas money or free boat ride for you! LOL

Thank you all for your great advice, guidence and suggestions. I'll post pictures and videos if I buy her.
If, for some reason, I decide aginst the Rinkerbuilt, then I'll be looking at the bass boat.

Thanks,
Neil

Hey, if you want to come up and take a look and a ride, I'll be meeting the owner at Caesar Creek Lake and will launch from Wellman Ramp at noon. That's on the southeast end of the lake, next to the dam. But gas money is on you! :) PM me if you want to meet up.

To answer why sometimes getting a fast responce from the sellers on craigslist is. They are like fishermen not wanting to hook the first fish that swims by but waiting on the BIG SUCKER thats just right to have the hook set deep. You are looking for a boat and they are looking for the "right" buyer.Con men avoid people that know what they want to buy and prefer people that dont know anything.

Re: Advice buying a used boat

Thanks to the fine advice from everyone here.... I bought a boat today!
I did end up buying the Rinkerbuilt. It was about a 3 hour drive to get it, but ended up taking 5 to get there. Of all days, on the way there, my idler pulley bearings gave out. Luckily, I was 2 miles from an Auto-Zone and was able to drive to it, get the part, borrow some tools, and fix it in the parking lot. Total cost: $14.99. :)
After that, we got lost a couple times, were caught in a downpour in Cinncinati, and witnessed a wreck right in front of us when a truck hydroplaned.
Anyway, we made it safely but decided not to hit the lake. The wether just wasn't cooperating. But he was very willing to have taken me, and that gave him credit.
So, bought, paid for, and now we're home.

Thanks so much for everyone's help and advice. Maybe next time Checkmate.

And here's my new girl:

Not just a boat, it's an adventure too!:)

I see it has an SEI outdrive, so no worry on parts availability.

:) We're pretty excited! Tomorrow is all about cleaning it up and making her look even better. If it's sunny, I should be getting my first boat sun burn. Weeeee! So happy!
