I've had this motor for about 3 years now. I've chased several problems down with it. Well a couple of years ago the gearcase exploded and i had it rebuilt. Well it's leaked water in ever since, not a lot but enough to make me change fluid regularly like every 3 or 4 trips. Well i noticed a rpm drop when all this was going on. I was getting 5500, 5600 rpm before the gearcase went bad now i get around 5200 and that's about it. I've played around with the jackplate and get minimal gains maybe 100 rpm at the most. Well that's one problem but i have two. Top speed around 62, 63 mph on my gps.
Second issue, i've noticed here lately it idles rough and it's sluggish out of the hole. So i do a compression check,
1=103
2= 103
3=102
4=102
5=95
6=94
So over the last couple of years i've had two shops do compression checks and both tell me it was good. All gauges read different and mine is around 10 years old or maybe even older. I checked compression because my motor the first time you get on plain it gets up and goes pretty good, after that it seems sluggish, like it's loading up on oil. Sluggish out of hole, rough idle, loss of rpm. Sounded like worn rings to me. So i did the old squirt some oil in the cylinder trick to see if the readings went up and they did. I may try it again because i don't think i turned it over enough before i put my gauge back on. Anyone know if this test is accurate in determining worn rings or not? Anyway here i am with a couple of problems and i'm not sure this motor is worth investing the money. It is a 1995 60 degree looper 175 evinrude intruder. Any advice would be appreciated.
