Re: Advice on 470 Please.

that square thing with wires to it and a hose on the sides of it in your last couple of pictures is the factory water cooled voltage regulator, which is usually what fails and leads owners to go the belt driven alt. It was never removed.

correct me if i'm wrong it still looks like the old voltage regulator is still live. you need to snip the two wires that go to the old stator. in this picture you see what i have done to my old stator wires which lead to the voltage reg. when i rebult my motor i totolly removed the volt reg alltogether i also removed the copper tube from volt reg and used that so the water will still flow. in the picture you see a black, 2 yellow, orange and red wires remove them you don't need them any more
by the looks of your pictures motor doesn't look that bad but keep an eye on your exhaust manifold and riser there is some good corrsion going on there

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

One thing I would do, is to put an alarm system on the engine, like the new models have. In fact you can just buy the alarm bits for the new engine and put then straight on your engine.

It's a really simple system, 12v from the ON position on the key goes to a siren, from the siren a wire runs to a couple of switches on the engine, one temperature, the other oil pressure, in parallel. The switch bodies are grounded, so if either switch closes, the siren gets current flow and makes a god awful noise :D

Here's the part numbers for them.

Siren -> -816492A6
Oil pressure switch (add this to a tee with the oil pressure sender) -> 87-805605A1
Oil pressure tee & adapter -> 22-28624 & 22-805059
Water temperature switch (find a hole to thread this in to, somewhere in the thermostat housing would be best) -> 87-806951

HTH,

Chris....

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

Thanksfor all the good advice guys.

Regarding the reg - can I take it out without having to tear the top end down ?
No point in having it if the alternator has been replaced.

chris - Siren great idea. Thanks - I will do that.

Another thing that occured to me is that the power assist pump is missing too - can she be steered ok on just the teleflex or is this another thing I need to address ?

Cheers.

Ayuh,... It would probably work Better, if ya remove the actuator, 'n hook up the cable to the transom without it...

voltage reg there is three bolts that hold it on just remove them and your good to go. you can see them in your picture but remember you have to replace it with a tube to allow water flow to the heat exchanger. there is many types of tubes you can use this has been dicussed for years. i just knocked the copper tube of the volt reg and it works good for me

Just to be a little more clear - better on teleflex alone or with PAS ?

I'll whip that reg right off this weekend.

Cheers again from the UK.

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

You don't need the power steering, I never had it on my 20ft with the 470 and it was fine, just helps you build your arms up a little quicker. :) It's probably not on there because when upgrading from stator to alternator, you either have to remove the power steering to fit it or buy a different mounting setup which causes one of the two to stick out and hit with the engine compartment cover.

Also, if you haven't, drain the oil and see if it's milky. If so, I'd pull the exhaust riser elbow at the back of the exhaust manifold and check to see if it's leaking by pouring water through the water jackets and see if it goes into the manifold side of the elbow. That thing rusts out and dumps exhaust water in your 4th cylinder.

I bought my 470 Boat for $500, non-running and let me tell you, it was the best learning experience I've ever had.... also probably the most stressful 3 months of my life, lol. It had everything wrong with it when I got started on it... bad stator, leaky cam seal, 3" exchanger, upper unit top gears trashed, bellows ripped, bad seals in the tilt/trim pump... it was a serious start from scratch but with the help of these forums, I got it on the water and it never left me stranded... even if I did have to stop 3-4 times on the way back to the dock to let it cool down. I probably put $1500 in it over 2-3 years and sold it for $1000. Best education I've gotten for that amount of money.

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

Thanks for that Curt.

I guess I'll be going through this with a fine toothed comb then.

I bought it as ready for the water after a rebuild so need to do some checks to make sure the rebuild was real and not a figment of the seller imagination.

If the oil is clean - still worth pulling the riser ?

just keep an eye on the temp and the level of the antifreeze if the riser is not leaking then don't worry. when you pull the riser off then you might have trouble. the machined surfaces have to be flat with the riser and exhaust manifold they are cast iron so when they corrode that's where they start right on the machined surface so when you try to put the riser back on the gasket can't do it's job when the machined surfaces are corroded. there has been many pictures on people that has had the same problem maybe some of them could post a picture to see what i mean

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

Thanks fm.

So basically if it ain't broke don't fix it ?

If its not losing water it ain't broke and I leave it alone.

I got my pmgr starter so will run her up at the weekend and check temps etc.

If any one has tell tale signs to look for please let me know if not already covered.

Thank you all.

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

Update.

I tried to check the weep hole on the WP casing and found a brass drain plug screwed in. I removed it and found it was caked in white grey crumbly stuff. I then tried to insert a very fine drill bit to see if it would go in but no. It's blocked.
Is this the right place ? Should there be a plug in a weep hole ?

Next I tried to start her. The new motor works fine but the spark was intermittent at the plugs. Coil sparks good. Dizzy cap rotor and points alll look new. Spark at points looks weak to so suspecting the condenser. Any further advice on this one please as it ran fine before ? i did notice that with the ignition on one of the positives to the distributor was getting warm.

An ideas chaPs ?

Thanks

Ron.

Oh yeah just remembered that when cranking fuel is blowing out of the gasket seal !

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

Wrong plug. The weep hole is just that a small, maybe 2mm hole on the lower srarboard side of the engine water pump, no plug just a small hole. Good looking points are not necessarily good working points. My suggestion would be a new set of points. Glad to see it is coming along:D

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

Thanks again terry.

Bank holiday here so points will have to wait till tomorrow.

Will dot he condenser etc too.

Regarding the weep hole I'll have to find and clear it. Chances are that it's blocked if the drain hole is.

That carb will have to come off too for inspection and rebuild .

Will keep you posted

Ron

Ok, I got half an hour on her today and measured only 2.7 volts at the coil positive.

I think this is supposed to go to the carb solenoid ? It's white and the wire gets warm with ingnition on.

Any ideas chaps ?

Re: Advice on 470 Please.

Well finally my boat might be running as it should have been when I first posted this thread.

The list so far...

New Exhaust manifold and riser
New starter
rebuilt card
rebuilt solenoid
points condenser etc
water pump kits x 2
flame arrester replacement
hoses
4 inch heat exchanger
solar panel and reg
new guages and senders
audible alarm kit
renewed wiring

and the following is how she sounds and looks - any comments invited.
