hey all, i have a 1967 Orlando Clipper that I am replacing the transom, stringers, and deck on, plus all the wood in the cabin. I am wanting to take the cap off the hull, but it is tabbed in with a 3 inch strip of CSM. I am wondering what is the best way to take this off? Can I take a sawzall and cut around the boat where the cap and hull meet, or will I have to get in there and grind it out to pull the cap? What do ya'all think?

It's hard to tell for sure from the pics, but it looks like you'll be able to cut it CAREFULLY With a sawzall all around... Go slow, try to keep the flange on both the hull and deck intact, it'll make things WAY easier to put back together!

thanks, that is what I was thinking. I won't get in a hurry with it, but was just checking to see if anyone on here had any better ideas or pointers on how to do it.

welll........seriously....

that is a flange joint....

i pass on doing flange joint work because if the hull and sides are not perfectly braced and supported during stringer deck/ foam replacement, re fitting the cap is impossible with out fiberglass cracking and gell coat crazing.

before you cut the glass behind the joint....lets see what we are working with ....you might be able to do this with out removing the cap.

more pics of the overall boat please.....and the trouble areas.

Re: advise on removing this cap

ok, I worked on the boat a little today, started tearing out all the wood, nearly everything was rotten, and also took some pictures to help show the problem area. I have removed about 90% of the floor, and the cab is gone. I'm keeping the stringers in place till I get the wood to make a cradle to hold the boat, which will be soon hopefully, kinda hard to find time to work on this, I'm also currently remodeling a house, been working on it for 2 and a half years now, and trying to finish putting the drywall up. Anywho, here is where I'm at now.

The first picture is the boat overall from the outside, second picture is the floor removed aft of the cabin, third picture is the cabin and floor all removed, and the last picture is the problem area. The cap is right up against the transom, just an inch and a half away, the same width of the transom. Since taking the whole cap off is kinda risky, should I just cut off the last foot to foot and a half of the cap off on both sides to get the transom back in, then repair where it was cut? There is also some damage on the keel on the bow from many years of beaching, I didn't get any pictures of that today, I forgot. That is the second reason I was wanting to take the cap off, so I could flip the hull, repair the keel, and paint the hull. I'm almost thinking that I would be better off building a cradle, replacing the stringers and floor, then repair the keel with the boat blocked up so I can get access to it, then paint with it right side up the whole time?

Nice lookin boat you got there.....

Maybe you can get away with removing a small section of the cap inner wall only on both sides?.....working from the inside and with stringers removed, do you think the transom board will slide in on an angle if you cut some of that away and then repair later?

That's exactly what I would recommend. Cut the gunwales back about a foot. Drill out the aluminum trim pieces if you want to salvage them and then cut the gunwales. You can glass them back on when the transom and stringers are done and if you are careful with your glassin you will be the only one that will ever know that they were ever cut. This will give you an idea of how it is done...

yep......just forget about pulling the cap.

make sure the hull is properly supported.....not on a roller trailer....

do all the wood and glass first....

when the boat is structuraly done......then do the keel from the underside
