Re: After tune up-won't start

Back to the motor, I think I did have the float upside down, so I turned it over, but it still won't start. It also still backfires. It did sound like it wanted to start for a brief second.

I noticed my plug wires aren't in the best of shape, but since the motor ran before I started all this, I don't see how they could be the weak link.

So to sum it up: I have good sparks, fuel mix into the carb won't start it, I don't think the carb is flooding, compression is good, flywheel pin is not sheared.

My wife thinks I should cut my losses and start saving for a better motor (killing any chance of going out this fall), but I'm not ready to give up on this thing!

You're not very tactful, but I get your point. But, it was a very specific couple of questions I was looking for answers to, not a general why isn't my motor running thread like this one. Also, if someone is has the same question, it is a lot easier for them to find this way.

Now, I am not trying to be the confrontational new guy. I hate when people do that on boards I have been active in for a long time. I hope we can leave it at this since we both got our point across.

You say I'm wasn't tactful, ....my reply was subtle with the goal of pointing out the obvious. By asking your "'general why isn't my motor running" in the same picture thread, we would have had a better handle on the work that you had already done visually, which can be a huge help. It is not the intention , by me or any other member of this board to intentionally attack or belittle another member. Not only is such behavior prohibited, it goes against the mission spirit of the forum, which is to convey knowledge and help folks. like yourself. In this spirit, I hope we can collectively help you to resolve your motors problems.

Now , as you say, back to the problem. I looked again at your picture thread and although at first glance things looked good, I have a question and an observation. You said you have good spark. When you replaced the coils, did you mount the coils with the coil base aligned with the armature mounting bosses? Careful alignment will insure maximum magnetic flux from the magnets which produces maximum voltage to the primary windings and a hotter spark. Proper alignment prevents the coils from contacting the spinning flywheel which produces heat and premature failure of your new coils.

Align coil so that surface A is flush with surface B.

In your picture thread you asked "Also trying to make sure the crankshaft is in the right place to set the points (in the third picture). If anything is wrong, please let me know!"

While I agree that your wiring looks good, and agree with a poster that suggested keeping the wires dressed so as not to contact the spinning flywheel etc, I think you may have a problem with the point settings. I think your points are opening too soon, when the piston has not reached Top Dead Center. Premature firing the spark before the exhaust port has closed can cause the backfire. Remove flywheel. Rotate crankshaft and align the crank shaft key and the point set rub block (part that rides the point cam). Set point gap to .020.
Rotate crank shaft 180 degrees, and again align the key with the rub block of the second point set. Set gap to .020.
Replace flywheel and torque to specs.

Report back on your findings, and Good Luck.

when you double post, there is not reason to be tactful. you are wasting our time. if you get in the habit of double posting, members remember that and quit looking at your post. they will just leave you high and dry, with no help.

With all due respect, I don't see how it's a double post. Besides, you posted twice in that thread without saying anything...

And I'm sure I'm not the only one who clicked on the link that Xcusme posted. That is a waste of time for everyone who clicked it. He could have got to the point and said "Hey, you could have posted that in the same thread!"

Yes, the two posts are related. Do I have to keep every question I have in the same thread? I can see I'm a marked man at iboats already. And especially after this post, most of you will probably leave me high and dry anyway. But I'm stubborn and I have to get my point across as well.

I'm a nice guy who just wants a little help. I'm not trying to waste anyone's time or start any fights. Thanks for hearing me out.
