I was wondering if any of you guys have a suggestion for a cheap way to build some sort of steering device. I have a 1964 18hp johnson on a 15ft fiberglass trihull fishing boat. I would love to find someway to change it from the tiller to anything. Any suggestions.

Re: Aftermarket steering

Hi, was doing a search for a similar problem and your post came up. I've found the guys here don't respond at all to some peoples questions.

I have a 93 65HP Johnson that had been converted from tiller to wheel steering, but the cable from the helm is shot. It has a cable clamp on the inside of the transom with the cable attached directly to a lever at the front of the engine. I was going to change to the style that goes through the pivot tube at the front of the motor, with a rod coming back to the motor, but I just saw that it doesn't have the tube on it. I'll have to stick to the original style.

If you have that lever with the threaded hole in it at the front of your motor, the parts to do this are available, but it will cost you probably $250 or so, plus a wheel.

I used to have a 60ish 40HP Johnson with wire cable steering that ran around both sides of the boat through pulleys to the motor, kind of like the old downhill cart steering. That was attached to the front carry handle (if that's what you call it) with a push in and turn pin. It had turnbuckles for adjusting, and IIRC, everthing was hung on springs to lessen the vibration, and that worked ok. Not sure if you can find the actual steering wheel part, but I see the pulleys, springs, and cable are still available, so maybe.

Westmarine has an online catalogue that you can browse through to see what's available. Bit of a pain to navigate but the parts pictures are good.

Other than that I don't know of anything. Good luck!
