Air box gasket omission

89 Johnson 65. I routinely remove the airbox to drain the carbs. Getting the gasket in place (the gasket inbetween the two airbox halves, not the air box to carb gasket) is a real pain.
Can I just leave it out?

My thoughts are that if the gasket wasn't necessary, why would the factory use one. However, since there isn't much dust and debris on the water, I don't see a problem.

Why are you draining the carbs? If sitting up to 1 year, fuel stabilizer in the gas is adequate. Also, cementing that gasket to one half of the air silencer works well.

DHP

Re: Air box gasket omission

I tried siliconing the gasket in place. Didn't hold.
My boat spends alot of time in the water, without running.
Very hot and humid.
I am afraid of sweating.
My kicker had water in the carb so bad it quit,
this is after only 5 mins of running time and after I had done a bowl removal in the spring.
New gas too.
I'd rather know the carbs are clean every spring.
I do it with all my motors.

Silicone has no business being near any area of that outboard.

Use either Marprox Sealer 1000, Boat Armor Sealer 1000, or what used to be OMC Adhesive which is probably now Bombardier Adhesive. All three of these substances are the same idential substance.

Use any of the above on "New" gaskets as DPH above suggests... sealing one side of the gaskets to the carburetor face plate assembly.

Not a good idea to set up a metal to metal contact in that area. The slightest bit of loosness will in a very short amount of time result in quite a bit of wear (it happens).

Joe Reeves or whoever,

On the same subject.

What, if anything, can be done.

To the plastic, air box / breather covers, when they get warped ?

I had a spare, and used it.

The one with engine, had blue permatex everywhere.

Also, a 1/8 " or more gap, on sides.

When I installed it temporarily, without the gasket.

All bolts installed, gap was still the same.

Is there a thicker gasket , I can get ?

I tried it, with the gasket (dry), still big gap.

I didn't like the permatex fix , someone previously tried.

Though , it is easy to see .

When its all over inside the engine , carbs , etc.

As, it was. In the engine I bought, for parts. LOL.

Is there a fix for this ?

Or do you just replace ?

Thanks,
KYHunter :)

Thnx for the responses.
It's the two platic halves of the air box I'm dealing with. No steel involved.
I'll stick the one side back on with the sealer 1000.

Voodoo.... Slipped my mind that your carb face plate cover assy was plastic.

KY.... I never encountered a warped face plate cover assy. Possible that assy has the wrong bolts installed (too long)?

Joe,
I checked , the bolts were correct.

It draws up fine at the corners , and where the bolts are.

Its on both sides, that there's , a gap.

Thanks for the reply, I have no idea what caused it to be deformed.

It wont even lay flat, on a flat surface.

Its not a real problem, as I had a good one. I was just curious, if this was common.

Considering the condition , the motor was in . Anything is possible.

Thanks Again,

KYHunter
