That is true only for the Campbell-Hausfield compressors...not the Chicago-Pneumatic. There is a coupon in this months Popular Mechanics.
Maybe your coupon is different than mine.

It does list Cambell Hausfield separately but definitely specifies compressors as not eligible.

That is one that that was sent to my email too and expires 12/31....but there are other 20% coupons in magazines that expire 5/2011 that do not exclude air compressors

I need to take a look at the magazine version because I want to buy a new 220V air compressor.

Turns out that Harbor Freight will not accept any coupons for air compressors even if they don't have the exclusions. I asked today at my local Harbor Freight. They also have a big "Correction" bulletin that states so at all the checkout stands.

Hmmm......good to know. That makes Northern Tool the better choice.

I got the Harbor Freights 2.5 HP, 21 Gallon, 120 Volt 125 PSI Cast Iron Vertical Air Compressor and the first time I turn it on I found a leak in the stem that comes up from the tank to the gauges. It is in the weld and I cant understand how this missed inspection. Then I try to turn it on today and I would take 10 or 12 cycles (switch to on, breaker at the compressor trips, turn switch to off, reseat breaker, try again) before it starts. I suspect it is the thick oil but but dang, I did not have that problem with my oiless system. Almost as much noise as the oiless system too. Not sure but I might end up returning it and getting my money back... I wanted the Home depot husky 26 gallon tank. But it is a kit and they will not sell the compressor alone.

I understand your frustration, but with as many of these things that get made a year, there is going to be one that slips through the cracks every once in a while, and I know, that does not make it any easier, been there done that more than once, My wife is tired of me says "Why Me" all the time.. That said, I have a couple of friends that have this compressor and they are quite happy with them, so you might take it back and exchange for another and see how it goes, if it don't work out, Harbor Freight is actually a pretty easy company to deal with and will give you your money back.

Could be that your circuit either has another load on it or the wire run is so long that the voltage drop causes excessive current draw. You are plugging it straight into an outlet right? No extension cord? The spec for the compresor says it draws 14A which will trip a marginal 15A breaker. For a big 110 compressor like that, I always use 20A circuits.

As one Carolinian to another I am sorry that I was the one that suggested harbor freight. I know HF can be a crap shoot but thier compressors have a pretty good reputaion. I hope your not too far from a HF because they do exchange with no questions asked. The oil-direct drives are noisy because they run at a higher speed than the pulley type. Good luck with the next one!

Yea I'm not a huge fan of the direct drive compressors but HF is hard to beat for the average user.

Sorry for the delay. Bigdee, dont worry, I dont see how this could in any way be your fault. I have 2 harbor freights to choose from and they are not that far from me. I returned that one and got a new one and tried it today and it is working fine. The manager even gave me a new bottle of oil without me even ask. So far so good...

Oil free for home use ,,,,commerical diffently an oiler...I have both in the garage and both are 15 plus years old ....maintanence is part also ,,,drain after use extends the life of any type ...plus water filters,strainners.....the most important part is when you buy the CFM's @ 90 IBS ...5.0 is about the minimun @ 90 LBS you should get as most impact tools run at 5.0 or above @ 90 LBS

I have a 240v bolt down large stand-up oil-less compressor the is approximately 15 yrs old still going strong. All I have to do is every now & then drain moisture from the bottom which there isn't much to drain.

Re: Air compressor Oil or maintenance free

I got the unit replaced about a week ago and what they did was make it look like a return/buy so I got the service plan date reset to when I got the last compressor. The old one was definitely a dud. This one not only dont leak (left it a few days full and the gauge did not move) and even in the cold weather we had (colder than before) it has no problem starting. Im happy now...

I bet you'll end up with a smaller one eventually ! :). I have the HD 26gal. Works great for big jobs, or painting, but it is noisy and takes a while to fill. That sucks when you just want to spin a nut off or fill a tire. My other compressor is a twin tank oil bath from Alltrade ($100 cheapie). I use that thing way more than my big one. It will run a framer or air gun. Granted you can't run it long but it has enough umph to change a tire or drive a few nails. To small to run a drill or paint gun though.

Oil bath, it will last much longer if taken care of. I have one that was my fathers, we got it for him in 1978 for fathers day when I was about 11, he passed about 8 years ago and I have the compressor now, the only thing done to it was reed valves replaced about 12 years ago and an oil change every spring, and 1 belt replacement.
