air in the fuel line

well guys im gonna take my boat out onto lake michigan ( in the harbor-milwaukee) for the first time tommorow!!! and uh ooo im getting air into my fuel line inside the cowl. i have a clear gas line and theres always about a 1/4 to a full inch of air in the line just after the connector. when i idle the motor no new fuel is getting sucked in. i discovered today that my gas tank screw cap did not have the air inlet open.... duh so my question is will that be enough to cure the problem? was that creating enough of a sucktion that air that normally wouldnt get in make it in?, the reason i cant test it out is because i cant get any money untill tommorow,on my way to the lake so i cant remix my gas enough where there isnt too much oil... haha i keep smoking out the garage.

Ayuh,.....

A Plugged Vent in a Fuel Tank is Usually a Pretty Serious Problem........

I gotta Think you might have Fixed your issue.....

well its 321 in the morning in Wisconsin and i just got time so i cant read back until i wake up so, dmnit i wont really know for sure but my motor is a 1966 evinrude 40 hp big twin witch was sleeping until 2 months ago. i found enough info on this site b4 that i didn't need too many stupid questions until this one.... my friends with the boat hitch are coming back from bike week in daytona beach today at 10 in the morning and i promised out of this world trout fishing 10-30lb browns and rainbows as it usually is but this will be the first time on my new boat and i don't like the coast guard all that much
so i will have to read this in the morning to not let my months of labor and planing to go to waste, these replies will directly influences weather i go fishing(i am the most addicted person known to date) or not, basically i want to know that I'm stupid for not venting my gas tank. PLEASE TELL ME I'M STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS

is eveyome here smarter than me or are we just "happy hours right now ..) ...
im almost 24 (on st.pattys day) and why am i so dumb nad left behind?.. no one taught me anything. i need help. ill trade advice with you, i can help you get a girl friend.....i guess its because ive never really had a father.... yeah thats it thats why i dont know about engines, thaks tony

One of the most likely places that outboards like yours suck air is from an ill fitting or shot "O" ring that is just inside the connector to the engine and tank. Check yours and replace as needed.
