I have a 78 johnson 140...I have read dhadley stating not to run it without the air box...I understand this and I wouldn't think about it...my motor is missing the black air silencers and wondered if it would hurt running it without them...I don't see where it would change the anount of air coming into the engine...maybe the velocity of it...want to make sure I'm not going to mess anything up since I just got her running well. Thanks!

It may sound and run fine but it will still create a lean condition.
That is bad news on the pistons. Look on ebay you can find one that fits.Better safe than sorry...

I'm not talking about the air box...or the cover....just the little black extensions....they call them air silencer extension in the manual...the air box and cover are both there...the carbs are sealed...just the little extensions are missing.

Won't hurt anything. On a crossflow like yours you can actually run without the cover. It's only the loopers that get leaned out. A 140 looper has a completely different carb.

On a crossflow you might even pick up a tad but the noise probably isn't worth it.

really?? well I like noise...kinda like the old quadrajets with an open intake...you could hear the air sucking into them. How much do you think I could gain?? I do have a question about these...well outboards in general..do we not have to worry about filtered air?? I know there isn't much on the water that can get in them...but that has always bothered me. Do we really not have anything to worry about being not filtered?? just something I've wondered. THanks guys.

Re: air silencers...??

There really isn't much dust out on the water to filter out. I don't know of a single motor that actually has an air filter....but somebody will point one out to me, I'm sure.

Just a note on the silencer. That whole system, along with the exhaust is supposedly tuned for maximum powr and efficiency. The noise pulses is part of the tuning. How much difference will it make with or without them? I don't have a clue...let us know.

Whenever the subject comes up, I think back to the time I tried to duct outside air into a 6hp carb where the motor had to run in a box (on a sailboat). Should be simple, huh? Well, I spent untold hours trying to make it work. That 6 wouldn't run worth crap breathing through a duct. Even with the duct being several times larger than the carb throat. Wouldn't work.
