I have a Mercury 40 hp classic oil injected 1991 model outboard with remote control. When turning the key of the ignition there is a short beep, which is normal. But sometimes, before the motor is even running, the beep returns, then weak, then a little louder. You can compare the sound with the internet modem connection. Sometimes the beep is gone, but also when the motor is operating, the beep gets louder. And sometimes there's a beep while the engine isn't running There is enough oil, and the watercooling system gives the control outlet.
Can anyone help me?

Serial Number: 09641207
Model Number: MER 1040312LB
Model Year: 1991
Description: ME - 40 ELO

Re: Alarm beep problem Mercury 40 hp classic 1991

This has happened to me a couple of times. Once when the heavens opened up and the last time I took the boat for a pressure wash at the local petrol station, I can only pressume it was water ingressing into either the remote or oil injection alarm connector. Once it had dried out no problem. Hope it may be as simple for you..

All the best Keith B...

Hello Keith B...Thanks for your reply. Since we live in Holland, heavens are opening up very frequently. Just have to wait for a dry period then. If this will solve the problem, I'll be very happy, because we get a lot of different suggestions like: oil control unit failure, sensors, cooling, wiring.

_JdH_

Re: Alarm beep problem Mercury 40 hp classic 1991

Hi there,

I have contacted the dealer that is servicing my motor and he says not to worry too much about the beeper, as long as the oil tank is filled and the control water flow is coming out of the back of the motor. In other words, he says we could disconnect the beeper and keep an eye on the oil level and the coolwater control flow.

Do you agree, or would we be taking a risk not knowing exactly the cause of this beep problem (as member CU2NITE suggested in another post).

We still think it's a strange problem when we turn the ignition key and the beeper is going of, even when the motor is not running. Does the motor then already give a signal?

Hope anyone can help us out.

Re: Alarm beep problem Mercury 40 hp classic 1991

I posted a test procedure here...
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=012991#000005

The title is Merc 60 Hp Beep Beep Beep. It pretty much covers the system. The procedure is in the last posting. I have found that anytime there is a wimpy beep involved, the module is bad.

I take issue with what your service facility said! I've had the overheat buzzer sound for me because the water intake was clogged with debris on several occasions. The warning sounded, I shut off the motor and cleared the debris, and that's all it took. Had the warning not sounded, the motor would've self destructed in a very short time. As it was, I went on my merry way and had no further problems. You can't watch that pee stream all the time. Hard on the neck. Harder on the boat if you run into something.

Re: Alarm beep problem Mercury 40 hp classic 1991

Thanks for your reply WillyBWright. We will try to check it that way.
But do you agree that when the oiltank is filled and the cooling system gives the control flow, that in theory the motor should be OK?
Or am I thinking too simple now (I'm quite new in outboards, so my questions might sound a litlle stupid). That the beeper is not working properly could be caused by a bad module or sensor, right?

If there's oil in the tank and the water is peeing, it should be good to go mechanically. Could be a sensor. More likely the module. But with the procedures I explained, you should be able to rule out sensor problems. I think you are more likely to have a bad module based on the unpredictable beeping and odd sounds you are getting. Could be a combination of problems.
