I have just bought a 86 ranger with a 150 mercury. While crusing an alarm under the console will go off for no reason. What could this be?
This is a continuous alarm that seems to stop after triming the motor.

Re: alarm goes off

I pre-mix oil/gas so it should not be the oil alarm

Rapid beep-beep-beep would have been the oil alarm, a continuous tone is the over-temp alarm.

If you have just bought the boat then you may want to do a bit of preventative maint, like replace the water pump and thermostats. Possibly also the poppet valve.

If the alarm continues, test the temp sensors.

If the temp sensors pass then it is possible that you may have a leaking head gasket.

Thanks, I was told it was a trim alarm. If there is such a thing. I will have someone check the the parts you suggested.

If you have the engine too high and trim it out till it starves for water, the overheat alarm will go off. It's a pretty crazy way to judge your trim limit.

A water pressure gauge would be invaluable for just that reason. With it you can judge the maximum safe trim under all load and sea conditions.

hope it helps
