alarm going off?

Hey all, I have a 2005 Yamaha 90 2 stroke with about 16 hours on it. Twice now the alarm has gone off but I cannot figure out why? The first time we were fishing off of a kelp bed. It was idling for maybe 20 minutes when it went off. I turned off the engine and fretted for a few minutes while I read the manual. Five minutes later I turned it back on and there was no alarm. I enjoyed the remainder of the three day trip with no engine problems, but plenty of nice Kings and Coho :) .

Three trips later I am out on the big Pacific again. While cruising back in from a good fishing trip the alarm goes off whereby I immediately kill the engine. This time we are drifting out to sea and the kicker is almost out of gas from a day of trolling. It took a good 30 minutes this time for the engine to turn without the alarm. The next day it was just fine.

The engine would turn over and come on but the alarm would still be beeping. I plan on bringing it in to the dealer as it is still on warranty but what could it be? Plenty of oil, the tell tale is peeing, everything seems ok??

I want this baby to go along time as I could barely afford the new engine in the first place! Help???

Searun1

Re: alarm going off?

Was there any evidence that the engine was overheating? You may have simply sucked a piece of kelp onto the water inlet causing it to overheat. Was it peeing when this happened. Next time it happens immediately check the pee stream and turn it off and check the water inlet.

Re: alarm going off?

what display did the tach show?
or is this a super budget boat that the factory tach was neglected?
the multifunction tach is worth the coinage. you may find that overheat is not usually a warrenty item unless the failed part of the cooling system is defective. I have had people bring me motors with impeller housings melted and get mad when the warrenty is refused. I hope your dealer finds the correct problem the first time. the alam has the same tone for overheat and oil the visual indicator on the tach tells the difference.
good luck and keep posting

Re: alarm going off?

I was thinking the same thing about the kelp in the first incident but when I looked back after quickly shutting down the engine it was still peeing. Same as the second time only I was not in the kelp but running back in to port?

I bought a Yamaha Digital tach, I just haven't put it in yet. It goes in today for sure. When I bought the engine I had a relatively new Teleflex tach on it so I did not have the Yamaha tach put in. After awhile I realized the value of having that tach so I went and bought one. Hopefully the dealer will figure out the problem.

Searun1

Re: alarm going off?

I also had a similar experience when some sand was picked up.Eventually it cleared up and next season I had to change the thermostats
