Alarm sound

I recently bought a 1992 Bayliner Capri. It is a 120 hp L-drive. We had it on the water yesterday & when we had it at WOT, an alarm sounded until we throttled down. The boat seemed to run fine except at WOT. I am a newbie at the boat thing, so any help would be great!

Did you receive any history of previous yearly maintenance and checks? There is an alarm that will usually alert you of the motor overheating. The cause is normally a lack of cooling water circulating through the motor or a mechanical issue. Such as: bad water pump impeller (due to age), restriction in the water pump as sand or trash (in low water), Or possibly a tune-up issue or wear (age or needed adjustments). If it stopped when you slowed from WOT you still need to find the cause at WOT.

Previous owner kept up on yearly maintenance & such. He also installed a new water pump impeller 3 weeks ago. He hooked muffs up a week ago (before I bought it) to show me it while running the boat. At one point, the alarm sounded & we found out the muffs had slipped down. I wonder if at that brief moment, it damaged the impeller?

Yup it probably did you will more then likely need a new water pump

Yes, the little bit of time it ran without the muffs on could hurt the impeller.
It might???? have been 2 seconds or 2 minutes???
It's not hard to change.
Just take pics of the linkage or anything you touch.

Thank you all for the input. I have another question.....What would cause oil/gas leak under the power head?? This is a Force outboard engine, so it's a Outboard but inside an engine compartment like an inboard. It is a 2 cycle oil injection. We can't find any leaks when the boat is running & when the boat is NOT running. I am new at all of this, but it doesn't take an expert to know you shouldn't have any leaks (especially fuel). I can post pics here in a few of the set up

Also after checking impeller check inside of exhaust hose for dry rot if the inside of hose breaking up little rubber chunks will plug up weep holes

These ldrives are notorious for over heating check thermostat should be a 130 degree thermostat hard to find 143 is fine if overheating persists pull bottom 2 plugs check for whiteish residue that indicates water getting bye head gasket or exhaust gasket you will have to pull engine for exhaust gaskets
